SUMMARY:Axis Gallery 18th National Juried Show
DESCRIPTION:625 S Street\, Sacramento \n\n\n\nReception\, Saturday August 12\, 5-8PM \n\n\n\nGallery hours otherwise Sat-Sun Noon-5PM. Show runs August 5-29th \n\n\n\nRebecca and Rachel Have the Same Goal\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition (From axisgallery.org)\n\n\n\nAxis Gallery is proud to present In Limbo\, our 18th National Juried Exhibition featuring juror Emily Zaiden. From her essay about the exhibition: \n\n\n\n“This year\, as we come further out of the black hole expanse of pandemic time\, life for many of us is still very much about reassessment. We entered a new mode as restrictions and the public health emergency ended\, following years of unclarity\, inconsistency\, and flux. We are that much closer to a new normal\, and we even have a bit of distance now to examine what we experienced. Much of the work here reflects and addresses the sense of re-emergence that has characterized our lives over the past year. Hesitancy\, fear\, sadness\, instability\, and loss also flow throughout. Wrapped up amongst all of this\, there are beams of hope for renewal.[…] These artists succeed in making us question the survival of beauty in an era of destruction\, division\, violence\, and death. Some works stem from the shock and anger we have felt countless times over the last few years. Others help us see and seek the beauty that exists in life and in our world. Abundant jolts of color characterize many of these works. These pieces\, even when they capture the tragic\, are ultimately optimistic and energetic because they are inherently constructive acts. Abstractions and still life overflow with light and vitality. There is a skilled and nuanced attentiveness to detail\, composition\, and structure across media. They all remind us that beauty is a fragile and fleeting force and thankfully\, they remain dedicated to its depiction.” \n\n\n\nAbout the Juror\n\n\n\nEmily Zaiden is director and curator of the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles\, where she has organized over seventy contemporary art\, craft\, and design exhibitions for the Center and partner museum venues since 2010. Zaiden oversees public programs\, a K-12 education initiative\, and digital projects\, including the development of an online Craft Video Dictionary for Craft in America. She publishes catalogs\, essays\, and articles for journals and books including Archives of American Art Journal\, American Tapestry Alliance\, Metalsmith\, Ettore Sottsass: Architect and Designer and Consuelo Jimenez Underwood (2022). She has served as juror and lectured widely. Zaiden has an M.A. from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and has focused on craft processes\, functional design\, cultural art\, and craft from a historical lens throughout her work. She was Research Associate to the Decorative Arts and Design department at LACMA and research editor for Architectural Digest prior to joining Craft in America.

Her work combines paint\, ink\, collaged elements and image transfers. \n\n\n\nThemes explored in her most recent work include feminism\, family\, and humor. Watching her babies grow into kids inspired her previous work on how grit and tenacity builds neurons in the brain and stronger communities. \n\n\n\nHer artwork has graced the covers of Inside Magazine\, beautified bike trails\, and can be seen in solo and group shows throughout Northern California. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @tenaciousgoods \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKate Farrall \n\n\n\nKate Farrall is a fine artist who creates experimental photography that includes making cameraless Polaroids\, exposing photos through the postal system\, and growing bioluminescent organisms fungus to make her images. She also creates abstract painted paper collages. Kate holds a BA in Art History\, Theory and Criticism and a BA in Photography from the University of Maryland Baltimore County as well as an MFA in Photography from the California College of the Arts. \n\n\n\nwww.katefarrall.comFacebook @KateFarrallArt Instagram @katefarrall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDawn Pedersen \n\n\n\nMy paintings are a reverberation of my love of all creatures\, of people\, of the microcosmos\, of the natural world. My influences include classical realism\, pop art\, surrealism\, wildlife illustration\, and sci-fi creature design. \n\n\n\nMy artwork is usually joyful\, playful\, full of color and humor\, and a celebration of nature. \n\n\n\nThere aren’t very many art techniques I haven’t tried\, or animals I don’t think are adorable. Even spiders and wasps. \n\n\n\nMy focus is the intimate life and personality of the living creature. I want viewers to be able to experience the individuality in my subjects’ eyes and postures. My ongoing challenge is to find ways to provoke curiosity and empathy about other kinds of lives. \n\n\n\nI earned a bachelor of arts in studio art (emphasis on drawing and painting) from CSU Sacramento in 1998. I followed that up with a teaching credential in art\, an MA in education\, and an AS in biology. \n\n\n\nI live in West Sacramento with my husband\, our son\, and our rotten but lovable tuxedo cat Loki. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @paintedbydawn \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaris Kaplan \n\n\n\nMaris Kaplan is a multi-disciplinary artist and maker focusing on textiles. With a passion for sustainability and creative reuse\, all works incorporate second hand materials such as thrifted fabric\, upcycled clothing\, and scraps from other local makers. Her creations range from large scale quilts to clothing and home goods. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @marispacifica_foundnmade \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeslie Colby \n\n\n\nIce tie dye art and apparel and botanical printed silk scarves and other works. \n\n\n\nFacebook: backyardartacademyInstagram: @backyardartacademy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPam Posz \n\n\n\nI have always snapped mental photographs of scenes and objects that I would plan on turning into paintings or other art. I am attracted to light and textures\, natural geometry\, images from nature\, and from my everyday life. I have started to explore social\, political\, and now environmental commentary. I have always loved to play around with color\, although not all of my work reflects this. Most of my work is somewhat abstract. \n\n\n\nI enjoy playing around with non-traditional and digital media as well as photography\, oil and watercolor painting\, and textile art. \n\n\n\nMy biggest influences have been Joseph Cornell\, Rothko\, Matisse\, Magritte\, and the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Japan. \n\n\n\nI have a Bachelor’s of Art from UC Davis. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @poszart

SUMMARY:We Wear Many Hats Art Show at Jimmy's Barber Garage
DESCRIPTION:What is the artwork about?\n\n\n\nWomen’s struggle to have it all and hold it all together. The teetering balance between the mental load we bear in addition to our careers and passions. Sometimes we balance it gracefully\, and sometimes things get weird. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow is the artwork made?\n\n\n\nHeather searches for open source photos online\, preferring portraits of women who are looking directly at the camera. These images are printed onto waterslide decal paper\, sprayed with a waterproof layer of clear acrylic then dampened and collaged over abstract painted and collaged backgrounds. \n\n\n\nHow can I purchase the artwork?\n\n\n\nVenmo amount and title to @tenaciousgoods \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about the Artist\n\n\n\nHeather Hogan has been working in mixed media including acrylic paint\, collage and printmaking for more than ten years. She explores themes of feminism\, family\, society\, science and community in her work.

SUMMARY:Membership Medley 2021 at Blue Line ARts
DESCRIPTION:From the Jurors \n\n\n\nEach year\, our team looks forward to Membership Medley as a time of gathering\, where the gallery is filled with art that shows the vibrancy and range of our Artist Member community. Past the official reopening in California\, we are excited for it to once again be filled with people\, too! The show includes works from members who have been supporting and volunteering for 15 years or longer\, alongside new artists who have just discovered our exhibitions and programs in the last year. It fulfills something at the core of Blue Line Arts’ mission: bringing together the work of established artists while still being a welcoming and uplifting gallery for emerging artists. Our members are at the heart of all we do at Blue Line Arts – and this year we are excited to offer an update to our benefits to include even more ways for members to get involved at the organization. \n\n\n\nMy Lands\, I Sea!\, 2021\, 18″ x 44″ Mixed media on wood panel

Building on the success of last year’s virtual auction\, the upcoming 2021 Art Auction season will feature the same lively events – Art Auction and Big Names\, Small Art (BNSA) – in a new hybrid virtual and in-person format. \nSilent Art Auction and BNSA will be held virtually on the Bidsquare platform\, with bidding scheduled to open in mid-May and auctions set to close the weekend of June 5–6. In addition\, a small selection of artworks will also be featured in a socially distanced Live Art Auction event in the Museum’s courtyard on the evening of Saturday\, June 5. \nAll Silent and Live Art Auction works will be included in a special exhibition at the Crocker\, on view from May 23 – June 6\, 2021.
