In the Cut

In the Cut brought together Heather Hogan, Gregory Shilling, and Sandra Cappelletti in an exhibition of low-relief and sculptural works made from painted and cut wood. Rooted in resistance, perseverance, and community, the show ran from March 6–28.

Our opening reception was packed with lovely people, connecting, smiling, chatting and writing post cards to their city counselors in support of their efforts to protect our immigrant communities. We collected over 45 postcards with your lovely thoughts, opinions, and artwork. Thank you for participating in that effort. Interactive Installation

Co-created by Heather Hogan and Gregory Shilling, “In the Cut” is an immersive art experience that merges multimedia expression with civic action. Housed within Prism Art Space’s black-room gallery, the installation confronts the complexities of human displacement and belonging through a haunting interplay of light, sound, and form.

Visitors are enveloped by video of a window ablaze, pre-recorded crackling sounds, and the delicate, live resonance of wind chimes. Within the space, drawn paper airplanes drift away from a hunched, larger-than-life figure, grounding the abstract atmosphere in raw emotion. By anchoring these aesthetic elements to a still projection and a tangible, interactive art-making and letter-writing campaign, the artists challenge viewers to bridge the gap between artistic contemplation and political advocacy—making their voices heard by the Sacramento City Council on the critical issue of sanctuary city protections.
