Birds in Flight

Birds in Flight is a site-specific installation designed to welcome visitors to the Yolo Basin Foundation’s educational pavilion. Attached to the ceiling beams, these sculptures serve as a bridge between the built environment and the vibrant ecosystem of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area.

The installation captures the fluid, rhythmic movement of a flock in transit, utilizing the pavilion’s vertical space to encourage students and visitors to “look up.” This dynamic overhead landscape is both an artistic and educational tool, featuring biologically accurate representations of the Snow Goose, Tundra Swan, Northern Pintail, and Northern Shoveler. By blending artistry with ecological accuracy, the work fosters a sense of wonder and curiosity, inviting visitors to notice the resident and migratory species that soar above the basin.

Thank you to the City of Davis and the Yolo Basin Foundation for including me in this project. Thank you to Ro Mottsmith for being a joy to work with, a great communicator and kick-ass project liaison. Lastly, thanks to my fabrication team, Kris Lewis at Capitol Metal Works and Chris Ramos at Dipsh*t Metal Refinishing. Installed by Antony Torres at CT Builders.
