A hands-on, multi-media workshop exploring the intersection of traditional cut paper collage and modern sublimation heat transfer science.
Participants learn to convert analog paper collage into vibrant, permanent fabric prints and functional art. Blending traditional printmaking and collage traditions with modern maker tools, this workshop encourages play with negative space, color contrast, and surface design, transforming transient paper collages into durable, archival textiles.
- Demonstration & Practice: Introduction to the process, composition strategies, and safety procedures for heat presses. Students practice the collage transfer process on a 4-inch square of polyester fabric.
- Hands-on creation of custom collage layouts using cut paper. Students press their collage designs onto small or large canvas totes and/or coasters and mousepads
- Skill Level: All Skill Levels (Beginner Friendly) The cut-paper collage approach requires no prior printmaking or textile experience. Beginners can achieve professional, vibrant results through intuitive shape-making, while advanced artists can experiment with layered compositions, fine detail cutting, and color theory.
Teaching Objectives & Outcomes
Introduce artists to accessible heat-transfer technology and surface design techniques. Foster creative experimentation and community engagement in a relaxed studio atmosphere.
By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with multiple custom-collaged fabric artworks including a, heat-pressed 4-inch patch, and a canvas tote bag, zippered bag and/or coasters or a circular mousepad.
Instructor Provided Supplies & Equipment
- Heat press machine(s) and protective Teflon sheets/parchment paper.
- Scissors, cutting mats, blades, and glue sticks.
- A wide variety of designs printed on sublimation paper.
- Blank polyester/canvas tote bags, coasters, mousepads, and fabric test scraps.
